How long, approximately, should it take to write new MBR. AMD Celeron 3300+
with 1 gig of ram, writing from CD, 80 gig harddrive (Hdd 0), partitioned C:
40g for OS (Partition 0) and E: 40g Partition 1.

About one tenth of a second. How exactly are you doing it?

I went into Recovery Console, typed C:\Windows>fixmbr, it asked to confirm,
typed 'Y'. It then diplayed 'Writing new master boot record on physical
drive \Device\Harddisk0\Partition0' but i thought i would get a confirmation
when done and be able then to type exit (C:\Windows>exit)....but so far it is
kust sitting there displaying that text. Can i just shut down and resatrt?

You obviously have to restart the machine. Here is an
alternative method to rewrite the MBR:
- Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk from
www.bootdisk.com.
- Type this command: fdisk /mbr
Even though this is a Win98 boot disk, it works very
nicely on a partition created by WinXP.

Thx for the info, i will do that for future ref. I have W98 boot floppy but
i need new one. Anyway, i managed to get Windows restarted, which i was
attempting to do and have stabilized so that it starts every time. But, it
seems as though everytime i make a hardware change (ie: video card, PCI card)
i lose the boot files. Requiring, Recovery Console and at very least FIXBOOT
command. I am going to repost that problem maybe somebody has answer to
that....thx again...D
