How keep two words together, nonbreaking?

I'm using Word2003 and wondered how to keep a phrase together...that is, how
to enter a "non-breaking space" so if the sentence wraps, the phrase still
stays together. Seems I recall there were two ways to do this.

1) a keystroke way to do this like <cntl><spacebar>... but that doesn't
work, or

2) a menu way, like [highlight words] > Format > Paragraph [x] keep words
together ...but there's no option like this.

The effect would be to correct this...

Big Conference' event in Seattle.

to this...
Welcome to our 2005
'Annual Big Conference' (no break in phrase)
event in Seattle.
