How Get OE Newsreader via Outlook 2003?

I have Windows XP Home (SP1). Naturally, I also have Outlook Express 6,
which I had previously used for a newsreader.

I just installed Outlook 2003 over Outlook 2000. (It's an improvement
but.) Previously, I used Outlook 2000 for mail. When I wanted a
newsreader, in Outlook I clicked on (I think it was) View> Goto> News.
In Outlook 2003, Help says you can add the News link to the Go menu by
customizing it, Right click on toolbar> Customize>. But on the commands
tab of the Customize box, on the commands list, I don't see News listed.
So how do I link to the OE newsreader (that would be OE without the mail
part) from Outlook 2003?

I can still start OE normally (off the start menu), and it includes the
newsreader. But that OE also has the mail component.

A related question:
I also used to goto OE newsreader through Internet Explorer 6 by Tools>
Mail and News> Read News (or I used the drop down menu from the envelope
icon). This doesn't work either.

So how do I open OE as a newsreader only? And how do I plant a link to
do so in Outlook 2003 and IE 6?

Never mind. You guys were too slow again!

I didn't have anything listed as my default newsreader. Control Panel>
(non-category view) Internet Options> Programs tab> Newsgroups> choose
Outlook Express form the drop down. But an odd thing: when I just went
there again for referencing what to say in this post, I noticed I again
didn't have anything listed as the default newsreader. !? I'll see how
this plays out.

This is the command line required to load outlook express as the news reader
(loads faster then just loading OE as normal mail, news reader)

"%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews

or

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews

but how to add it to outlook 2003 i don't know i don't have it yet...... :(

Have you tried looking in OL Help?

<paste>
The first time you use the newsreader, you must add the News command to the
Go menu.

Add the News command to the Go menu:
On the Standard toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you
use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, click Customize on the
Tools menu, and then click the Toolbars tab.), click the Toolbar Options
arrow.

Point to Add or Remove Buttons, and then click Customize.

Click the Commands tab.

In the Categories list, click Go.

In the Commands list, click News, and drag it, without releasing the mouse,
until it rests over the Go menu.

When the menu displays a list of commands, point to where you want the
command to appear, and then release the mouse.

Click the Go menu, and then click News.
</paste>

OL View>Go to>News is the preferred way to open the Newsreader when OL is
the default Mail Client.

I always wondered about those command line commands.
If you put it in the run box (shortcut Windows key + R), is that the
same as doing it from a DOS prompt? It seems to do the same thing.
And what are the quotation marks for? When do you need them?
And what's the difference between the two types of slashes?
Finally, is there always a space required before the / ?

Also, I noticed you have extra lines between your paragraphs. I get that
too when I post - that is, when I copy from Word and paste in the New
Message window of OE. If I paste in Notepad first and then re-copy and
then paste into OE's New Message window, then I don't get the extra
lines.

Does anybody know how I can get rid of the extra lines when I cut and
paste directly form Word to OE's New Message window?

Inline...

You must type in those lines *exactly* as you see them (assuming MSIMN.EXE
resides at C:\Program Files\Outlook Express on your machine), complete with
quotes & spaces. Copy/paste, if necessary.

They mean different things in coding.

Yes, see above.

You can't. OE doesn't like Word's formatting (or OL's RTF, for that
matter).

Too slow? Do you know how many times a day this question is answered in this
group?
If you're in a hurry, search the group for an answer instead of posting a
question that is posted several times a day.

The run box is for starting Windows programs or for starting Dos programs in
a Dos window.
A Dos prompt will only Dos activities.
And what are the quotation marks for? When do you need them?

The quotation marks are for long file name support. (because of the spaces
in the folder names)
With the quotation marks, you would put
C:\Progra~1\Outlook~1\msimn.exe /outnews

Oh, and one major caveat is to not make OE the default news reader if it
asks when you open it.

shift+enter, not just enter, when composing the message in Word?

That works. Interesting. Believe it or not, I've been trying to find
the answer to that question for over two years.

But contrary to another answer, it *is* possible to have Word
configured to _not_ add the extra spaces even without pressing the
shift. I once had it that way.

I wonder how to get it that way.

i'm having the same exact problem. news is not listed

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.
