How does this system work?

Is there a good source of information on how this
newsgroup post and reply system works? I mean in detail,
not just a superficial explanation.

For example, when i search for 'text' in the message body
in this group I find a message posted 9/3/04 2:09:06 AM
from Daniel about a text box problem. But since replys
are not included in the search list (at least not under
the original post), I come back to the main listing in
this group (microsoft.public.access.forms) to look for
any replys to that message and there is no message
posted 9/3/04 2:09:06 am! Where did that message go?
Why does it only show in the search results?

I really don't know. Have you tried Google? at
http://groups.google.com/ The results allow you to display one message or
the whole conversation.
