how does the HP scanjet 4c stack up against newer scanners?

I salvaged a SCSI 4C scanner from the retired bin and hooked it up
awhile ago. I've never used a desktop scanner a lot previously, but this
does seem to have fairly decent output, even when I increase a 4x6 photo
to 200% it is plenty good enough to display on a monitor for a slide
show. I am using HP's latest software for this scanner, the output is
noticeable better than XP's built in program.

What I am wondering is how does this behometh stack up against its new,
very compact competitors that sell around $100? Is the output from them
equal/better or does one have to spend a few more sheckels than this?

I have also downloaded a trial version of vuescan to try with both this
and my Nikon ls-2000, but the factory software seems pretty adequate at
this point, is Vuescan worth paying the $$ for?

TIA

Your 4C will do nicely.
It's 600 optical ppi is adequate for most all scanning tasks, short of
very small originals that must be output very large.
Also, it has legal size bed, a rarity anymore.
There is only so much detail in flat copy/photo prints, and that scanner
will get it all.

VueScan is the reason I'm still using my 4c; it is cranking away as I
write this. I find that my colors are more accurate with VS, AND (big
plus) I can edit an image in Photoshop while another scan is in
progress. This is something you cannot do with a TWAIN driven scanner
because you must close the scanning window before any editing can take
place.
