I just upgraded to office 2007 and before when I would start to type a name
of someone to email to it would automatically suggest people whose name I had
started typing.
outlook 2007 doesn't do that.
how do I make it do that? Thanks

A) Tools - Options - PReferences - E-Mail Options - Advanced E-Mail Options
- Suggest names while completing To, Cc, and Bcc fields should be checked.
B) The list (which is a binary nk2 file) is populated based on who you've
mailed. So... start mailing people and it should start filling in. (ok,
technically, it builds based on who is on the To/Cc/Bcc lines when you save
a message, so you don't actually need to send messages).

If you're on the same machine, the nk2 file should still be there, perhaps
your profile name got changed. You'd want to go rename the nk2 file (search
all files and folders, and enable the hidden/system files search) to the
name of your new profile.

I have a possibly related 'problem' with Outlook 2007. Autocomplete will not
use names from my Contacts List. It autofills with all kinds of names that
I've manually filled in addresses for in the past, which is useful and
helpful, but I'm danged if I can see the point of a Contacts List if
Autocomplete won't also include names from it.

Example: I type the letter "B" in the "To" field. Up pops a list of
suggestions, including Bill, Betty and Bathsheba, all of whom I wrote to
yesterday and who aren't in my Contacts, but Bob, who is one of my Contacts,
is nowhere to be found on the list.

Of course I can hit "To" and go to my Contacts and pick the right one, but
it seems such a no-brainer to include names from my Contacts - as appropriate
- among the names that Autocomplete suggests...

The Outlook Nicknames file is independent of your contacts list. Run a
search for NK2 for more details on that.

You can also type your contact's name and then hit Ctrl-K to force
Outlook to check the name against your address book. That's same as
clicking the check names button. Your name will then get added to the
Outlook nickname file.

I am going to guess the next two questions you will want to post. ;)

You can further change the order of lookup across multiple address
books. Hit Ctrl-Shift-B (or open Address Book from any window) and then
Tools -> Options. You can further specify additional contacts folders as
Outlook e-mail address books as they won't be by default. Right-click on
a folder, choose properties, and then go to the Outlook Address Book tab
and find the checkbox to enable that setting.
