How does a media card reader transfer data from the media card to the
hard drive? I am specifically thinking about the built in card
readers that come with laptops. What is the interface the built in
media card reader utilizes to transfer the data over to the hard
drive? Is the data transerfed to memory before saved to the hard
drive? I do not have a hardware background so any help would be
appreciated.

It transfers via USB to RAM before being written to the HDD.
