How do you reformat a style after the current paragraph in Word XP?

It's really frustrating when you can't exactly work a function that
used to work with an old version in a new version that's far better in
almost all aspects.

With Word 2000, I concluded that the easiest way to change the
paragraph format of a style is to pick a paragraph based on a
particular style, change paragraph formats, select the paragraph,
select the style box on the tool bar, press enter, and select "update
the style after this paragraph" on the dialog box.

It was pretty easy and simple.

However, I can't seem to find this function in Word XP.

Is there a similar way to change the paragraph format of a style this
way?

This is called "updating by example," and it can be done in Word 2002
provided you check the box for "Prompt to update styles" on the Edit tab of
Tools | Options. Note, however, that if you have the Styles & Formatting
task pane displayed, it is even easier: click the arrow beside the name of
the selected style and choose "Update to match selection." This works for
all styles except Normal (which can't be updated by example the other way,
either).

Thank you.
Yes, that's what I wanted.

However, i'm experience a most strange thing.
When i tried to update the "footnote text" style by example, it does
not show up in the "Styles & Formatting" task pane.
What's wrong?

Even if you display "All Styles," it will not be displayed. Microsoft uses a
rather curious definition of "all." You can choose Custom and select exactly
which styles you want to see, or you can force Word to display all styles in
the Styles dropdown (on the Formatting toolbar--not the Styles and
Formatting task pane) by pressing Shift while clicking the down arrow.
