How do you read an "etl" file

No, really - how do you read them?

If the Performance tool (Start:Programs:Administrative
Tools:Performance) allows you to create a new trace log
using "Performanc Logs and Alerts:Trace Logs" you would
think that it would allow you to see the logs that you
capture.

I can't find any help which describes how to open and look
at the logs that are captured in the "etl" file.
 
I tried this by copying the Support Tools located on the
XP CD. It didn't work. The result was formatted but
everything came up "unknown" - totally useless.
