how do you permanently change language of spell corect in word

i have been tying to change the spell corect language from US to UK english,
if I change the default lanuage it dosent work, i select UK english and when
i try to write it jumps back to US

I need to type someting before you can change the language from US to UK, so
i can't save the a blank document as the normal template because you can't
change the language without typing anything.

I take it that you have Windows set up to UK English?

You need to make sure that you have a UK keyboard and that it is set as a UK
keyboard in the Control Panel.

Then you need to change the default language using Tools, Language, Set
Language (remembering to press the DEFAULT button).
