How do you get rid of these damn pop-up ads?

It's hard for me to call myself a newbie having been
computing for almost 30 years. But, I recently switched
back to a windows based pc built by Velocity Mico. Great
machine, less than 2 weeks old, using windows XP pro as
my OS. From day 1, I've been receiving pop-up messages
from out of no where. How do I stop this? A lot of the
ads are from companies selling a product that they claim
will stop their ads. It galls me immensely to pay them
since they are a major part of the problem. Can anyone
tell me what to do about this or where to go? I'm ready
to go back to my G4, never faced this kind of problem on

Go into control panel
Click administrative tools
Click component services
Click services local
Scroll down to messenger
Right click to properties
Click stop service
Change automatic to manual
Click apply
That should do it!

The problem is the vulnerable computer, not the ads.
