how do you get rid of the paragraph symbol on your documents

A paragraph symbol keeps coming up on my word documents. How do I get rid of
it? it looks like an inverted P with an extra vertical line.
 
Press Ctrl+Shift+*. If that doesn't help, then:

In Word 2003 or earlier, click on Tools | Options | View tab | uncheck
the "Paragraph marks" box | OK.

In Word 2007, click on Office Button | Word Options | Display | uncheck
the "Paragraph marks" box | OK.
