How do you copy a window within an app to the clipboard?

I'm trying to create powerpoint slides for a training class and when I do a
ctrl printscreen/ alt printscreen, the entire screen is copied, not just the
active selection window within the application. is there any way to do this
without cropping/resizing the image?

For example:
I want to copy only the new question window on my screen now, not including
the background of the IE newsgroups.

Alt-prtScrn copies just the active window.
