My 2003 word does not automatically capitalizes a new sentence after the
previous sentence ended with R2 090 760. the instead of The. Thank you

Under Insert, AutoCorrect, AutoCorrect tab, check the box for "Capitalize
first letter of Sentences".
Hope this helps

Thank you, Dean, but I have already done that. I think it lies with the
check box re exceptions, but even there I cannot come right! Deon.

The original reason for this change (the failure to capitalize was not
always the case) was apparently the request of some large corporates
(probably law firms) that did not want automatic capitalization at the
beginning of numbered items. Fair enough, but the way this was implemented
resulted in failure to capitalize even after numbers in running text, which
is unexpected and (most of the time) absurd. I guess MS had more complaints
about this than about the previous situation, so they flip-flopped back in
Word 2007.
