How do we install wordpad on a Windows XP computer with WORDPAD.EX_ ?

How do we install Wordpad on a WinXP computer?

Searching for "wordpad", I find the following:
- C:\i386\WORDPAD.EX_
- C:\i386\wordpad.inf
- C:\i386\wordpad.chm
- C:\i386\wordpad.hlp

I downloaded a *.doc template form to write to Nancy Pelosi & Hillary
Clinton asking for their record on votes to repeal the hellish horrors of
the alternative minimum tax system (a second federal tax system for
California and New Yorkers).

I don't have Microsoft Word or Sun Open Office - but shouldn't wordpad
suffice for a simple memo?

But how do I install Wordpad from the files that I have?

First off...
by default...XP already has wordpad.

If you deleted it just use the expand command

viz:

C:\i386> expand wordpad.ex_ c:\winnt\wordpad.exe

and second, you can research this simply be going to the appropriate
*.gov website for each member (and if that is not enough then use Yahoo
or AOL's government pages).

I should note that I ran a complete file system search and there is no
other anything-wordpad-anything on my computer.

Yet I never uninstalled wordpad (at least on purpose I didn't).

Some people said to look in "c:\program files\windows nt\accessories" but
I don't even have a c:\program files directory as I moved it to c:\programs
the day I bought the computer via the registry search and replace mechanism
of PC magazine change of address.

Can I just install wordpad into
c:\programs\editors\microsof\wordpad\wordpad.exe using the INF file? Do I
modify that INF file or copy it to the directory above to run the
installation?

by default...XP already has wordpad.
If you deleted it just use the expand command
C:\i386> expand wordpad.ex_ c:\winnt\wordpad.

Here is what I tried on the Windows XP command line:

Start > Run > cmd
c:\> cd c:\i386
c:\> mkdir c:\programs\editors\microsof\wordpad
c:\> expand wordpad.ex_ c:\programs\editors\microsof\wordpad

This provided the message:
Microsoft (R) File Expansion Utility Version 5.1.2600.0

Expanding wordpad.ex_ to c:\programs\editors\microsof\wordpad\wordpad.ex_.
wordpad.ex_: 78082 bytes expanded to 214528 bytes, 174% increase.

Huh?

When I do a listing of what resulted, all it did was move the wordpad.ex_
file to the desired directory.

c:\> dir c:\programs\editors\microsof\wordpad
This provided the listing:

C:\i386> dir c:\programs\editors\microsof\wordpad
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 23AC-319F

Directory of c:\programs\editors\microsof\wordpad

02/17/2007 01:12 PM <DIR> ..

1 File(s) 214,528 bytes
2 Dir(s) 18,204,901,376 bytes free

But when I created a shortcut called "wordpad" on the desktop and then
clicked on it so that it would find wordpad.exe, it failed to find it.

Maybe the "expand" command doesn't work like we think it works?

I had never heard of the DOS expand command before.
The help says:

C:\> expand /?

Expands one or more compressed files.

-D Display list of files in source.
Source Source file specification. Wildcards may be used.
-F:Files Name of files to expand from a .CAB.
Destination Destination file | path specification.

If Source is multiple files and -r is not specified,
Destination must be a directory.

Am I doing something wrong to install wordpad on WinXP?

now in the target directory RENAME wordpad.ex_ to wordpad.exe

It should already be in your "C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories"
directory (I think) and also in your Start>Programs>Acessories shortcuts

Could this *be* further off-topic for alt.comp.freeware?

Follow-ups set accordingly.

now in the target directory RENAME wordpad.ex_ to wordpad.exe

Renaming wordpad.ex_ to wordpad.exe worked like a charm!

Installing Wordpad freeware this way doesn't create the shortcut so I
created one at:
Start > Programs > Editors > Microsoft > Wordpad

It also doesn't make the association to *.doc so I created that also.

directory (I think) and also in your Start>Programs>Acessories shortcuts

I don't even have a "C:\program files" folder, having moved it with COA
change of address the day I bought the computer to c:\programs and building
an organized hierarchy to organize the Microsoft hair brained flat
hierarchy into something that makes sense hierarchically.

So now the freeware wordpad program is where it belongs at
c:\programs\editors\microsof\wordpad

I didn't know anyone still used a c:\program files directory anymore?

This is alt.comp.freeware.
XP groups and politics are that way ----->

Isn't wordpad freeware?

Even so, since wordpad is limited, is there any other freeware for *.doc
docs other than Sun Open Office?

Is there a lightweight freeware replacement for wordpad?

You might want to have a look here for some
standalone freeware Wordprocessors
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2007/PL2007TEXT.php#1.01Editor:WordProcessor

and more for you to browser here (around 20), in the category
"1.01 Editor: Word Processor" :

Well, then, why bother asking when you don't follow standard practice?

The correct term is Legacyware.

If "legacyware" means "commercial software which is still being sold
and supported", then that's the correct term.
