Hi, what I think "lobster" is trying to say -- in his/her own shorthand --
is to set your BIOS to boot first from your CD drive.

Then, put your XP CD Install into your CD drive and power up your machine.

Your PC will boot from the Install CD and offer you a series of choices.
Select the ones that are appropriate for what you want to do. In your case,
you will want to re-format your hard drive, create a new partition, and do a
complete installation.

Formatting the hard drive to solve a virus problem is rather like
using an axe to trim one's fingernails. Sure, it'll probably get the
job done, but it's rather messy...., and almost always unnecessary.
What other corrective measures have you already attempted?

Because many of the newer viruses and worms can disable antivirus
applications whose definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one
or more of the free on-line scanners to double-check your system.

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

McAfee Security - FreeScan

Symantec Security Check

Panda ActiveScan - Free online scanner

If you still wish to proceed:

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Reinstall the system after booting the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and
after the license agreement take New Install. When it asks you to
confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the current partition and make
a new RAW one to be formatted at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one

Be sure to get the firewall in place before connecting to the net *at
all*. I would look for a CD of SP2 to run straight off immediately
after the rebuild
