How do I use this slide adapter?

I can't find anything on the internet -- any help appreciated!!!
HP Scanjet 5300C, I found a slide adapter that I had squirrelled away
in a drawer (had no use at the time). Now I break it out, I put in a
slide, and I can see the image but it's very small, I thought this
slide adapter was supposed to (using it's mirrors) make a larger image
to scan? I'm sure I'm missing something basic here.

You make a larger image by scanning it at higher resolution.

Try scanning it at 600 dpi for an image size roughly 800x540 pixels.
And even higher resolution if you want a larger image than that.
Double the resolution doubles the image size.

That's not what the adaptor does, no. The mirrors simply provide a
backlight through the slide, so that the image is properly lit for
scanning (since slides are designed to be lit from behind, rather than
from in front like ordinary pictures). They don't change the size of
the scanned image at all.
