How do I use the Format Painter button ?

FWIW, I find Copy Format (Ctrl+Shift+C) and Paste Format (Ctrl+Shift+V) more
useful, not least because the copied format remains available for pasting
indefinitely (until you copy a different format), allowing you to perform
other operations in between formatting.

I have never had any luck using the format painter in Word (2000). The
Painter works well in Excel, but (for instance) if I format a cell in a
table a certain way (colour, centred, bold say) select the cell, click the
painter, and then click a new cell - nothing..... no format copying,
nothing.

Am I missing something ?

Ah - good to see another person who prefers the keyboard.... In Excel, if
you double click the Painter Icon, you can copy to different locations with
each furrther click, but that doesn't seem to work for me in Word either....
