how do I unshadow a check box in word?

When using check boxes in a form in MS Word they print in a gray shadow. How
do I unshadow them?
 
Unprotect the form and click on Form Field Shading on the Forms Toolbar and
that should do it for you.
 
On the Forms toolbar click the button for Form Field Shading to turn it off.

I tried that first. It turns the shading off for the rest of the document,
but for some reason all the check boxes (in this case on a fax form) still
remain shaded.
