How do I unlock a selection in order to modify a document?

I cannot do any work on Word since I keep getting the message that I cannot
modify the document because the selection is blocked. How do I unlock it or
what do I need to do to just be able to use the program?

The usual reason for this message is that you have not activated Word or it
is a trial version that has expired.
