How do I unlock a file so that it can be modified?

Kaykay,

Can you tell us a little more ablut this problem. What exactly are you
unable to do? What do you mean by "unlock"?
 
If I understand your request:

Start up access, then go to the file|open. Find the file you want to open.
Hold the shift button then click open. This should allow you to get access
to the file.
