I upgraded from Windows NT to XP Professional. XP seems
to be working fine, but I still have NT taking up a lot
of room on my hard drive. Is it possible to uninstall it?

It should be listed in Add/Remove programs you can uninstall it from there.

Only if the box was checked during the upgrade - if not, then it must be a
manual un-install.

does "manual uninstall" mean just deleting all the files?
Are any NT files shared with XP?

Only the boot files I think - if NT was on a separate partition (which It
should be) then just delete the files in the partition. You will need to
edit the boot.ini file (I think) to get rid of the dual-boot option on
startup. But do check with someone else first, I'm not the world's greatest
authority on this!

OK - thanks!

The normal way to "uninstall" _any_ operating system is to format
the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice. From your
question, however, I gather that this wouldn't be a good idea in your
case.

Because you elected to create a dual-boot configuration by not
selecting the "Upgrade" option offered during WinXP's installation,
you'll need to carefully choose the directory into which you
originally installed WinNT and then delete it. You'll then need to
manually edit C:\Boot.ini to remove the line(s) that point to the old
WinNT installation.

There is no uninstall option when upgrading from NT to XP. OP sounds like it
was a new install anyway and has two version of Windows installed.
If they are installed on the same partition, the link below will help.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address box.
I have two installations of Windows/Windows XP on the same partition.......

oops, was not aware of that. There is from 98 to XP

I realize that. Thought it could be removed just like 98 could. :-)

Not on a NT to XP upgrade - that does not save files against an
uninstall, so I don't think the entry will appear. If it does, then
taking it offers a choice of uninstalling XP or removing the backed up
files.

Aside from this, the upgrade ought to have been done by running from the
NT and taking Upgrade - that should not leave NT files around. If it
were done by doing a New Install and setting up a dual boot, then it
should have been done into a Windows\ folder, while the NT will be in a
WinNT\ one that will no longer be used. If that is the case, then
delete that WinNT\ folder, and then run MSConfig.exe. On its Boot.ini
page click 'Check all Paths', which will find the NT one no longer valid
and offer to remove the entry from boot.ini

Yes I was just recently made aware of the fact that XP doesn't set up NT to
be removed later like it did with an upgrade over 98.

Psst... in your OE compose window, customize the toolbar and add a button
for "Insert signature" Then when you finish writing a reply - click the
button.

By using the automatic signature - your reply is coming in after your sig.
Some newsreaders will strip anything below the "dash-dash-space" (that's
why people put the dash, dash, space in to begin with).

Cool I wasn't aware of that feature.
I knew about the dash, dash though.
Thanks Sharon!
Well lookey there. It worked :-)
