How do I unhide filenames, directory names, etc. in DOS prompt DIR

CHKDSK on an external 1394 HD showed the disk had about 2/3 of its capacity
used in 517 files. But a DIR comes back with no names; File Not Found

I had been using this HD for Norton Ghost, and decided to try some other
backup software. I deleted the NG files. This put them into the Norton
recycle bin. I purged the files in the external HD bin, and now a CHKDSK
shows that I recovered billions of bytes. But I still can't get identities
of the 508 files indicated by CHKDSK -- DIR still reports no files found.

I am very curious about what is on this HD. How can I unhide the contents?
