How do I undo a Windows XP Restore?

I am helping a friend with his computer.

We tried to restore to a point two weeks ago to solve some
other problems. The machine will reboot but gets stuck on
the desktop and freezes. We are trying to avoid a
reformat/reinstall if possible.

How can I go back to what I had before I asked to restore?

Is there a progrem like sysregrestore that I can run from
the c: dos prompt?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi

Try booting into Safe Mode for a System Restore - to another checkpoint.

Hi Pete C,

Try booting into Safe Mode to see if you can then run System Restore in
order to Undo last restoration. If no joy being able to run in Safe Mode,
then follow the instructions in this MSKB article in order to run the System
Restore tool from a Command Prompt:

Regards,

I have done this with Windows 98SE, how do I do this with
Win XP?

Thanks again.

Hi

Reboot and then keep tapping F8. You should come to a screen with Safe Mode
as one option. One of the other options on that screen is 'Last Known Good
Configuration', but from your posting I'm not sure if this will work. You
could try it though.

If you are saying that you want to "undo" a System Restore that you
performed, each time you perform a restoration, it is a change made to your
computer. System Restore creates restore operation restore points to track
the change and the restoration. You can select these restore operation
restore points in the Select a restore point screen in the System Restore
Wizard to undo the restoration.

At the C: prompt, did you run the command as it was specified in the article
(i.e., %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe )?

If it still will not run, does it give you an error message?

Regards,

Yes,

I ran it as it was written in the article and it did
nothing. Then, relying on my old DOS experience I
changed directories to get to dive into the "restore"
directory, saw that the rstrui.exe file was there, tried
to run it and it still did nothing, not even an error.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again...

If you can boot with F8 to the menu, take
Safe Mode - Command Prompt.

In that run
c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
which is the usual graphic System Restore control and it would have
'undo last restore operation'
