How do I type without replacing the letters?

As I'm typing when I mess up and press the backspace and then start typing
again it replaces the letters with the new letters. How do i change that?

You need to turn off the "Typing replaces selection".

Tools, Options, and General (I think.)

No, no, no. Don't do that. Do what Dan said. Typing Replaces Selection is a
good thing.
