I refuse to do the latest MCrap update due to all the errors I see. So
how do I turn that friggin' red-x'ed alert off until _I_ want it on?
Thanks!

Go to the Control Panel/Security Center
Click on the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.
Note that if the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" doesn't remember settings upon reboot,
you may wish to disable the Security Center by:-

Click Start, select Run, and type in: services.msc

Locate "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set "Startup type" to Disabled.

I had also read some of the problems on the latest updates, but since seeing
PC's at work updating ok I allowed mine at home to update when prompted via
auto update. No problems at all.
Perhaps you might want to consider updating anyway.

Thanks, Neil. I will consider this advice.

Thanks for your help. Should have investigated that myself!
