Your question is a bit cryptic and is missing a few key items of
information - most notably the version of Word you're using. In addition,
I'm not really certain what you mean by the "Word office template screen".
However, I'll take a shot anyway.
If you are using Word 2003 and you are talking about the pane that is
displayed along the right side of the window when you start Word, then the
answer is as follows:
1. Click Tools | Options then select the "View" tab in the "Options"
dialog box.
2. Under "Show" clear the checkbox labeled "Startup Task Pane".
If you're talking about something else or using a different version of Word,
then post back with more information and we'll try again.

Gordon, it is Office 2003 version, the template help screen. when i checked
the options screen, the startup box was already unchecked. I can select an
option from within the template help to clear off the help screen, but that
only works temporarily while I am in that document. any other ideas on how
to turn it off? thanks for your help!

it is the template help pane. it appears to the right hand side of each

I am referring to the Template Help pane. When I open Word, the Getting
Started pane displays, when I open a document the Template Help displays. i
would like to turn off the Template Help pane permanently. I would also be

The instructions provided in my previous post should do what you want. If
the "Startup Task Pane" checkbox is definitely NOT selected, it may be that
the Task Pane is being invoked by some other means. Do you have any
third-party programs, global templates or other add-ins installed? If so,
then it's possible that one of these may be forcing the display of the Task
Pane. This seems especially plausible given that: "Template Help" is not a
standard Task Pane in Word; and the Task Pane was marketed to the developer
community as a "hot" feature because it could be controlled
programmatically. (In fact, I used to work for a company that made a COM
add-in that exploited the Task Pane in just this way - although it would be
considered very sloppy programming to write code that _always_ displayed the
Task Pane and didn't give the user the option to turn it off.) If it's an
add-in that causing this behaviour you would be best advised to contact the
vendor, as there is no functionality in Word that will resolve this issue.

its appearing in the Online Content Options.
Word's Help doesn't seem to know anything about it, but one of the search
results at

download a template from the Microsoft online site." This particular
document is about PowerPoint, but the principle seems to be the same (and it

I believe you are referring to the task pane that shows Help for the
template. As Suzanne noted, you can clear the option "Show Template Help
automatically when available" in Help, however that won't prevent it from
displaying on someone's else's computer should you share the document with
others. The way to correct this in the document is to view the File
Properties and on the Custom tab delete the _TemplateID property. For
step-by-step instructions take a look at this article and the section titled

Excellent! this helped *so* much, Suzanne & Beth! I kept trying to turn off something with the templates in Word or help panes, but no matter how I saved the file, the word doc kept opening with the right-side "Template Help" pane. You've made my day!
The Template Help screen comes up when you've created a document from one of the Word Templates such as a fax template, or a resume template, etc.
In order to stop the pane from coming up, once I've fully created my template, I "select all" then copy the document to a plain old Word document and re-save it to another name. Now your document is no longer a "Template" thereby stopping that silly pane!
