How do I turn off indexing?

How do I turn off indexing?

One of my computers are in the living room, and it's really annoying to
listen to the noise from the hard-drive when I'm watching TV.

I've searched a bit and it seem like its not possible to turn indexing off,
which really make me feel very irritated and I'm very close to re-install XP
on the box!

With Windows Vista it isn't possible to turn indexing off. With the early
beta's you could, but as the Vista neared RTM Microsoft prevented the
indexing option being turned off. I've never found any option for turning it
off in the RTM copy, anyway. Maybe i'm missing something?

I really fear it's all about blocking google desktop, which I would
personally rather have indexing my drives (and by the way do not make as much
noise as this indexing from Microsoft).

Well, I guess you can change indexed locations (i.e. unselect all of them)
using Indexing Options in Control Panel. But the problem is, it's not the
only thing that can make the disk get busy. Another is background defrag and
other "idle tasks" that kick in when computer is idle. I'm not sure all of
them are configurable.

I do not have RTM yet , I have RC2. I turned it off on my second hard drive
by right-clicking the hard drive and selecting properties. There is a
checkbox for "Index this drive for faster searching" that I unchecked.

I know in XP, I just disable the indexing service.

Well start doing something that most users beginners and advanced did not do
in XP--look the topic up in Help because there is good info there:

1) You can use the control panel applet for Indexing. I know --it's not
esoteric of VIP esque sophisticated but hey it's there in RTM at least. I
never looked for it before and I'm not running the older builds.

2) You can also go to Programs>Add Remove>Windows Components and an Indexing
Box will appear.

3) You can also turn off the indexing services at Task Manager.

For the most nuanced granular control far and away check this out:

4) You can right click the drive and turn off indexing, but it down't
specify indexing granularly for example if you use the control panel applet
you have

First dialogue box--

Offline Menu
Start Menu
Users

and if you click the advanced button you have additionally

"Advanced Indexing Options" hey hey (maybe they have VIP and Extry)

Index encrypted files
Treat similar words with diacritics (now there's a thesarous word for all
you CEO boys and girls from da janitah ain't it)
Reindex selected locations
Restore Your Index to Original Settings
Current Index location hmmm ck this honey out
New location, after service is restarted
and girls and boys you can click

Advanced Indexing Help

Yes Virginia, in the spirit of the Holidays the Help server also reached by
helppane.exe in the Vista run box as opposed to that old back in the day
XP's helpctr.exe in the run box has a Help topic of Oldie but Goodie
Indexing FAQs. Is life damn good or what?

You don't have to think about that mean old TV underscoring the isolated
leader of the free world is delusional and you're along for the money
hemorrhaging death train hospital filling ride.

Enjoy

Remember under the Sinofsky flag of "we'll ship any piece of crap becuse
Allchin's leaving and shove it in a box and slap a logo onit--hey how bout
that Groove boys and girls" that RTM is the new Beta 1 for MSFT in Vista.

It's not about blocking google desktop. That's an entirely separate
indexing situation, which can be turned off independently in the google
controls just as google has its company and MSFT has its. Google knows how
to make money from web advertising and Yusuf Mehdi and his merry band of
elves is taking lessons from them.

Google Desktop in Microsoft Vista
Why should I enable the Google Desktop search index in Microsoft Vista?

Enabling the Google Desktop search index helps to improve your desktop
searches. You'll be able to view previous versions of your documents and
also search additional items such as your web history, Gmail and PDFs. When
you do searches, you'll get high quality snippets to help you understand why
a given result is relevant. You'll also see thumbnail previews of your
search results for images, videos and your web history. While enabling the
Google

Removing deleted files from search results - Some users like the fact that
Google Desktop saves cached versions of deleted files in case they need to
retrieve them. But we know this isn't for everyone. Don't want to see
deleted files in your search results? Just enable the "remove deleted items"
option in your Desktop preferences.

Enjoy.

Vista RTM is the new MSFT Beta 1--they used to call what they RTM'd Beta 1
so Hosta la Vista baby. Twist 'n shout. Indifference does rule at Redmond.

They can be very bright but their arrogance in ignoring bugs--we bugged
this--makes them sometimes much less than bright. Hell yes they have done
some stupid things in Vista. I preached their tin eardness all along. You
have no idea how very arrogant these people can be collectively until you
get to know themn.

Yes but which component of Indexing you turning off there Jane?

All?
Some?

How does this compare and contrast with the topics Help discusses in Search
and Advanced features at the Indexing applet on the control panel I just
outlined?

You didn't try to use Logic and Vista or Logic and MSFT or Logic and

The slogan on that campus should be: "We take arrogance to new levels and

When have you ever seen aa Windows OS without a significant percent of

2) make you wonder if those people in Bldg. 26 and beyond get off campus and
live in the real world?

that sure was a long and twisting answer.

I'm sure Microsoft did not look away from Google's desktop tools when they
made their choice.

Vista is pretty much all about getting back the desktop anyways.

That is my suspicion since media center isn't included in the business

One of the stronger points in Vista is it's advanced search capabilities.
These capabilities depend on indexing of the files. If you have folders that
you know you will never want to search - turn off indexing for that folder
from within folder properties | Advanced.

Would you care to expand on that answer? As i said in my original post i
could turn off indexing in early builds of Vista but was unable to find any
way of turning it off in later builds. I'm sure this question was also
posted in the mvp private news groups and the beta newsgroups and the answer
came back No you couldn't turn off indexing. So if you know how to turn it
off, perhaps you can enlighten us all of your method?

I will be the first to admit if i have got it wrong, but i haven't found a
way of disabling it.
