How do I transfer files from home pc to laptop via ethernet cable?

The people at Best Buy told me this was all I needed and that XP would detect
it and set it up automatically. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked. Anyone out
here have any tips?

First, you need a crossover Ethernet cable if the cable is being used to
directly connect two computers without a hub, switch or router between them.
