How do I transfer files between desktop and notebook

Hi,

I recently bought Linksys wireless-G broadband router v1.1 (model #:
WRTG54G). I have desktop running Windows 2000 Professional and a notebook
running Windows XP Home edition. Using the wireless router I am able to surf
the net and check my email from both (desktop and laptop), but I do not know
how to set up the home network. I want to share the disk drive/folder on my
both the computers so that from notebook I will be able to access shared
drive of the desktop and vice versa.

Can you please tell me in detail as who to do it so that I can transfer the
files and folders between desktop and notebook using wireless router? Please
tell me all the steps involved because I am not a technical person.

Thank you.

Well Joe I had it working when I first set it up and suddenly nothing worked
any more I'm using XPHE on my host desktop and Win 98SE on my laptop. I
managed to get internet sharing working after finding the box to check but
have spent many hours reading posts and web sites and fiddling around with
XP trying to get file sharing etc to work again. Many people on this
newsgroup are having the same problem. Please let us know if you find the
solution!

It seems that XP just decides to change settings on it's own and won't say
what it changed.

The only clues I have so far is that it seemed to quit working shortly (but
not immediately) after installing Norton Anti-Virus and when my daughter
upgraded MSN Messenger. I'm also wondering if everyone having this problem
installed Spybot. Norton found a virus in my copy of it and also in the one
I have at work. They were downloaded from different sources.

If you read some previous posts you will find some suggestions to try.
Disabling firewalls is one of them. This seems rather selfdefeating
considering how many viruses and adwares I've been getting lately. A lot of
this stuff is beyond me. The firewall in XP supposedly closes some ports by
default but they can be reopened manally. Unfortunately I have no clue as
to how to do this and Windows Help is, as usual, no help. I guess we are
supposed to subcribe to technical support. Poor Bill Gates needs the money
desperately.

Hi

As a first step make sure that your File Sharing is configured correctly on
both computers.

This link might help in case of trouble: http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

When File sharing is configured, and it is working correctly there are few
options to copy, move, use, files across computers.

My favorite one is Drive Mapping.

Let say that you have two computers let call them X and Y.

Each one of these computers has Drive C: you can map the Drive C: of
computer Y into X give it a drive letter (to make it easy I would assign the
letter Y).

Once yiu are done computer X has Now its original Drive C: and drive Y,
drive Y being Drive C: of computer Y. Files of Y can be copy, move, use, on
computer X.

Similarly you can Map in Computer Y the Drive C: of X.

How to Map? Look for the term Drive mapping in Windows XP native help.
