How do I tell a file's type/extention?

Hi! :)

Suppose I've got a file with no extention or an incorrect extention. How do
I tell what the file type/extention is? I'm thinking of how Windows media
player can tell if a file's format doesn't match the extention, so I imagine
that there must be a way

Thanx in advance :)

You would have to look inside the file and have some
knowledge about its structure. If you can't do this then
you have to try a number of likely extension and see
of they work.
