How do I stop text from crowding in a SmartArt Graphic?

We inserted the SmartArt Graphic; began to type in the text pane; each letter
typed is being typed on top of the previous typed letter. (crowding of
letters)

I know this is going to sound crazy, but it could be a printer driver
issue - PowerPoint requires a local printer driver it likes or you get weird
display issues:
