How do I stop outlook opening twice on start-up?

When starting Outlook, multiple windows open and intermittently do this
throughout the day.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what the cause may be?
 
How do you start Outlook - from the Office Shortcut Bar or Quick Launch?
Do you double-click by any chance? Do you have Accessibility features
enabled? What version of Outlook; what OS?
 
Single-Click from Quick launch, have deleted shortcuts and re-instated them.

It intermittently opens extra outlook windows without prompting.

IBM Thinkpad, Windows XP and Office 2003.
 
This is very puzzling... It does only happen with Outlook - no other
application? If it also happens with other apps, then your mouse may be
defective - issuing (sometimes) two signals for a single click.

Otherwise I have no ideas.
