How do I stop getting duplicate junk emails in deleted & my inbox

A

Autumn

All the junk mail I receive (which are labeled Junk Mail) seem to be
duplicating themselves so that I get them in both my deleted mail as well as
my inbox. This has never happened until recently and I don't know how to go
about changing it. It's very distracting to have to go through each and every
piece of junk mail that's in my inbox so I can be sure not to delete what is
actual business. I get a minimum of 200 overnight and various amounts
throughout the day. I need some advise.

Why are they going to your deleted items folder? Do you have a rule moving
them there/deleting them?

Thanks for responding. They have always gone to my deleted folder, as I
believe there was a rule set up prior to my arrival here, but now just in the
last week they are going into my inbox AND my deleted folder (duplicates).
Last week I created a rule for a business email that went to my deleted
folder, which shouldn't have, and I'm thinking I did something wrong while
creating that rule, causing all JUNK to go into both folders. Suggestions?

Outlook never labels junk mail. If you see a label, then eithder the server
is labeling it or you have an antispam application running that is doing it.

Do you have any rules defined?

Thank you for responding. I'm not sure who/what is labeling the emails.
Most are labeled either: VL-Junk or SL-Junk and up until last week, ALL went
directly into my deleted file. (I do not have a junk mail folder) Now
suddenly they are showing up in both the inbox and the deleted folder.

As far as I am aware, all my rules are defined in one fashion or another, at
least the ones that I have set in the 3 years I've been here. A suggestion I
received outside of this venue, was to delete/clear all my rules and start
over. Is that wise?

Again, not an Outlook problem, since OUtlook doesn't "label" messages.

Why don't you look for us and tell us what rules you have. At the same
time, tell us what version of Outlook you're using. If you don't have a
"Junk E-mail" folder, you're using an Outlook vwersion that's at least eight
years old.

Only if you know what all your rules do and know how to define them again.

The marking of the emails with SL-Junk or VL-Junk is not a problem, but was
always helpful in differentiating between "real" emails and junk; but as
mentioned, these labeled emails are duplicating themselves so I get two of
each one - one in inbox and one in deleted.

We are using Outlook 2002, running on XP. 99% of my rules are to take
"junk" mail and place in the deleted folder. About 1% are for certain emails
that went to deleted (unlabeled) to go directly to my inbox, as they are
legitimate business emails. Since the trouble started last week, I have been
making rules to have these duplicate junk emails just get deleted permanently
with no further action, but since the spammers send so many and I have the
main email account, they just seem to keep coming. When I arrive in the AM,
I have a minimum of 200 junk emails in both folders, so I'm sure you can see
how frustrating this is.

Thank you.

So, your jaunk mail handling is done by rules, just as I suspected. I also
suspect that last week you added a rule and that's when the trouble started.
Whenever you have rules that move or delete messages, you should include the
"stop processing more rules" action on those rules or you will see the
symptoms you describe. Check your rules that delete. I'll bet at least one
of them does not have the "stop processing more rules" action and that if
you add that action to those deletion rules that your problem will stop.

Find the rule that's doing the Junk mail, move it to the top of the list and
add the 'Stop Processing More Rules' action. Basically, it sounds like the
items that are triggering the Junk rule are also triggering another rule, so
you're getting a copy of the message.

Thank you very much!! That solved my problem. I checked each of the rules
set last week, and not only found that one didn't have the "don't process any
other rules", which I updated as you directed, but I also found one entitled
INBOX which was sending all my junk emails to the deleted folder and the
inbox. I've now deleted that rule completely, and all seems to be back to
normal.

Thanks again for your perseverance to help me get this problem resolved. It
is most appreciated!!
