When I create & format a document using XP then open it with 97 my formatting
(underlines, numbering etc.)and heading syles change randomly. How do I
prevent this from happening?

First, in Word XP, go under Tools > Templates and Add-Ins and make sure that
the option to update styles is _not_ checked. This should _never_ be checked
permanently. It is a document setting.

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TextReflow.htm.

Some things done in Word 2000 or later will open weird in Word 97. There is
an option under Tools > Options > Save to save using only features available
in Word 97. Tables in particular can be a problem.
