how do I stop emails opening on receipt

A colleague of mine states that if an email arrives when she is away from her
desk, when she goes back into Outlook the message is open instead of just
staying in her in box showing unread. How can I stop it doing this?
 
Perhaps this is what you are referring. If you are on using the
preview/reading pane when the selection changes or after so many minutes (if
selected) the item will change from unread to read. Check this under
Tools - Options - Other - Reading Pane or may be listed as Preview Pane.
