how do i sort files in powerpoint by filename?

when i bring the pictures in, which are all named to keep them in a
particular order, they all go out of order

Farnoth,
Not quite clear what you mean. Is it the order of the files in the Insert
picture dialogue? If that is your problem have you tried clicking on the
view button (I believe it's the second button from the right) and choosing
details, this gives you columns, click on the heading above the name column
to sort your pictures.

In the dialog box where you select files, change the view to Details, click on
Names to change the sort order to alphabetical by name, then click again to
reverse the order.

The pictures should come into PPT in the reverse of the order you see in the
dialog box.
