How do I show revision bars ONLY in final markup without balloons?

I need to show my revision bars in my final document. As far as I can tell
this means I must check the "insertions and deletions" tab on the "show" drop
down menu. However, this also means that my balloons are visible. When I
uncheck the "always" tab under the balloons option, the balloons disappear
but the insertions and deletions remain within the document. I am using
Office 2000.

Hi Diane

The balloons were only invented for Word 2002. So you must be using Word
2002 or Word 2003, and not Word 2000.

To have final with markup display revision bars but no other markings, then
do Tools > Options > Track Changes. Set Insertions and Deletions to display
as None (meaning that there will be no special mark to indicate an insertion
or a deletion). Turn on the "Changed lines" mark to get the vertical
revisions bars. And turn off balloons.

Hope this helps.

Hi Shauna

Thank you for your help. I am relieved that there seems to be more going on
here than I thought as I had previously tried to do as you suggested but with
only partial success. My issue is that when I set Insertions and Deletions
to display none - word leaves my deleted text in the document as well as my
newly inserted text. Hence - much scratching of the head!!! Any thoughts?

Hi Dian

The following may help:
How does Track Changes in Microsoft Word work?
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/trackchanges/HowTrackChangesWorks.html

In particular, you can hide or display the tracked changes in your document.
Just hiding them doesn't make them go away. And, Word can only display the
changed lines mark if there is something in that line that was changed. That
is, you can't accept (or reject) all the tracked changes and still have
vertical revision marks.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks for your help Shauna - it would appear that I need to ask MS to
redesign this particular element. What do you think are my chances?

If you run the following macro, it should give you what you want:

Options.DeletedTextMark = wdDeletedTextMarkHidden
Options.InsertedTextMark = wdInsertedTextMarkNone
Options.RevisedLinesMark = wdRevisedLinesMarkOutsideBorder

In Word 2003, you can do this via the Tools>Options dialog (you did not have
full control in Word 2002). What you missed was the hidden option for
deleted text.

Hi Diane

If you have 2003, you should be able to set the formatting for Deletions to
Hidden. With Insertions formatted with "None", Balloons Off, and change bars
showing, this should give you what you want.

(In 2002, you can't change the Deletions markup from the Options dialog -
you have to use a macro instead.)
