this seems like it should be a basic thing, i just reinsalled windows, and
now i cannot connect to the internet, i have dsl. where do i go to setup the
internet?

How are you connecting to your DSL modem?

If connecting from modem directly to computer then you need to install the
drivers and programs provided by your ISP for your modem.

If you are connecting your modem to the WAN port on your router then you
need to go to your routers configuration and set it up for your internet
connection. i.e. select static, dynamic or PPOE connection and include your
username and password.

before, the guy from the isp told me that the disc they distributed was
faulty, and he gave me another way to do it, it worked fine for 8 months,
until just now when i had to reformat.

Well, im sorry but I cant read the techs mind that helped you so I have no
idea what he told you. Call them again and ask for another disk.

yeah its too bad they couldnt just make it easy...rather than idiotic like it
currently is...it seems to me that a millions of people are on the internet,
so how hard can it be? so why is it that i cant get on?

More then likely you are using a PPOE account and the modem wont log into
your ISP until you have entered your Username and Password. Thats what the
ISP software is usually for.

Mike,

With all due respect, it *is* easy, if you have all the information
you need and know how to do it.

In the same way that calculus is easy.

The techie you spoke to is dealing with dozens of queries such as your
every day AND is only dealing with connections to one ISP. For him,
getting you connected is easy. For you, who has done it once, it is
therefore extremely difficult and confusing.

You imply "they should make it easy". To my mind PCs and Operating
Systems have come an incredibly long way in terms of making things
"user friendly" over the last 20 years. However, if you want
everything to "just work" without any knowledge, this can only be
achieved if every computer, peripheral and ISP is 100% identical (with
the same graphics card, on the same network etc etc etc.)

Solutions such as this are becoming available for people who want to
use just one or two specific aspects of "computing" (eg iPod, WebTV),
but a PC is a different beast altogether - designed to modified to do
a variety of jobs as the user sees fit.

I hope you resolve your problem, as DLinkGuru said, your best bet is
probably a call to your ISP.

Alternatively, if you want to be able to do it yourself, you will need
to invest some of your time in learning and understanding what you are
doing.

Bleating that it doesn't work won't really help. Neither will asking
why you can't get on without providing us any details (which is
basically everything to do with your connection short of your username
and password)
