How do I set up an automatic font style for footnotes?

It used to be that when I inserted a footnote, the font style would
automatically be Times New Roman, 10 pt. Now, the default 12 pt., and each
time I write a footnote, I have to manually highlight whatever I write and
change it to 10pt. How can I correct this so that the formatting is
automatically 10pt.?

Change the style called Footnote. You could do this in your normal.dot file
if you always want them to appear the same way. See "Editing..."
