How do I set the default account to use for sending emails?

I have a number of email accounts that I routinely receive emails from. I
would like to permanently set the default account from which I send emails. I
have selected one account as the default but this does NOT seem to solve the
problem. I am using the latest version of outlook 2003 with SP1. I read in
one thread where it is by design that when replying to an email that it uses
the received email account. This may work for some groups, but it does not
work for me. Some accounts are specialty accounts such as webmaster or info
accounts, but once received I would like to reply through the default account
without having to worry about setting the account manually. This issue also
applies to newly created messages not just replies, it does not use the
default account.

New messages should always use the default account unless you change it -
replies will always use the received account unless you select a different
account. Provided they are pop/imap accounts, you can easily configure each
account to send using the default account information - when you create the
accounts, enter the display name and email address of the default account.
Enter the SMTP address of the default server and in more settings, outgoing
server, enter the user/password of the default account for authentication.

If every account has the same outgoing information, it won't matter which
account new messages use - but the reason it is using the wrong account is
likely because it's not properly authenticating to the default account and
so it rolls to the next one it finds that it can send on. See

I tried your suggestion of setting the reply email address to the desired
default address and initial tests indicate that it seems to solve the
problem. I had not thought of using that field in the context of this
problem. I thought that selecting a default account would not require using
that field. Thanks.
