i successfully am able to unclick all of my word autocorrect settings,
turning them all off. however, it does not retain my settings after i close
word. therefore, i have to do it all over again when i open word. is there
a way to save these settings as my default? i have been doing this for a
year now, it is a pain, i much prefered word97. my current version is
word2003 sp2 part of microsoft office pro edition 2003

The autocorrect options are stored in binary form in a registry key. If that
key is damaged, Word can exhibit various bizarre behaviors, including
inability to save changed options. Read these articles:

http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/DataKeySettings.htm
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm in the section
"Deleting and recreating the corrupt registry values"

If all else fails, you can force the settings you want to take effect each
time Word starts by writing an AutoExec macro. See the last section of
http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm.

To add to what Jay has said, poorly written add-ins often (inadvertently)
change some of Word's options at startup. If you can isolate the add-in that
is doing this (and don't need it), you can remove it.
