HOW DO I RETRIEVE FILES I HAVE DELETED FROM MY RECYCE BIN? (I DID NOT
"EMPTY" THE RECYCLE BIN--USED "DELETE KEY".)
*I "deleted" items from my Delete Items folder in Outlook (not express).
*I opened Recycle Bin and "deleted" items in my Recycle Bin (using delete
key).
*I NEED to retrieve these deleted items.
*I do not know where they might be residing on my hard drive.
*I contacted my Provider and they are unable to retrieve the e-mails for me.
(I am NOW set up where they can help me in the FUTURE--)
*I am using Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2.

1. You can not do so without 3rd party software, such as EasyRecovery
Professional from www.ontrack.com

2. If you are using the same computer now, though you deleted the files
only 5 minutes ago, the chances are that some of them may already have been
obliterated by something else being saved in the deleted files drive space.
Your chances for recovery go down hill from here, the longer you use said
computer.

Then they are irretrievably gone, short of using specialized data
recovery software.

*I NEED to retrieve these deleted items.

Should we ask why you'd store important emails in the Deleted items
folder or the recycle bin?

*I do not know where they might be residing on my hard drive.

A professional data recovery service (or an expansive data recovery
application that doesn't need to be installed) might be able to recover
them.

1) Anything that you delete in Outlook (or Outlook Express) can never, under
any circumstances, go to the Recycle Bin on your desktop. It can only go to
the "Deleted Items" folder within the Outlook Application. The full version
of outlook, actually, stores everything--every folder, e-mail, attachment,
sticky note, calendar item, and adress book entry--inside just 1 huge file:
outlook.pst. It makes backups, try searching for and opening archive.pst or
outlook-backup.pst, located in the c:\documents and settings\<name>\local
settings\application data\microsoft\outlook folder, and see if it's there.

2) If it was removed from there, there is absoultly no way to recover it.
This is because it wasn't a single file that was removed from the hard drive
and is now recoverable. It was stored within 1 single file, and that file
has now been changed and over-written (the outlook.pst). Sorry.

3) If you use a POP mail server (possible other types too), the message may
still be on the server, but by default Outlook removes it from the server
when it downloads the message. I don't have mine do that for a reason
similar to this.

Sorry for the bad news,
- skeene

Ouch! Please don't yell at us. We can hear you if you type normally, in
mixed case.

Sorry, but you're out of luck. Some kinds of things can sometiomes be
undeleted, but not from Outlook.

Thank you Shawn! It worked--after looking at several, I was able to narrow
it down and found the files. I have recovered them completely!
I must tell you that others who were unable to solve my problem were too
concerned with my posting inexperience (my first time) or my screen name
(which happens to be what my grandchildren call me) .

This is what my grandchildren call me and was the first thing that came to my
mind when asked for a screen name. This is my first posting. FYI, I did
receive a fix for my situation from Shawn Keene.

Please see Shawn Keene's response to my situation. Just thought it might be
interesting to you. It worked--I totally recovered my e-mails.

Embarassed apology--this is my first posting.
Just by the way, check out Shawn Keene's answer to my situation. I
was able to recover all lost e-mails. Yay!

Your use of all caps in your first post to a newsgroup is completely
forgivable. Reporting the resolution of your problem is much appreciated.
Many repeat posters have never grasped that lesson!

As far as I know, there really is no difference between using <Del> on
files in the Recyle Bin and using "Empty Recyle Bin". Pretty much the
same thing happens.

Perhaps someone else can enlighten me?

In case you're curious, take a look at Shawn Keene's response. I, very
happily, was able to recover all items. Whew! I was asked by another Poster
why I might have been storing such important items in the Deleted folder...I
accidentally moved the result of a sort to , obviously, the wrong place.
Thank you very much for your response. It is appreciated.

OK, thanks for the apology, and we all make mistakes as beginners.

Great, glad to hear it! I misread your message as your having deleted them
from the deleted items folder (even though you clearly said "Recycle Bin")

Richard's answer is correct for files removed from Recycled. Apparently you
did not do this but were asking about messages deleted from Outlook or
Outlook Express.

NOTE, Toni, that not ALL deleted items go to the "Recyle Bin". It
really depends on the application. Some move them there, some don't.

So really be careful with deleting files in XP.

A decent file recovery application will find deleted files, usually,
and allow one to recover them. What actually happens when you delete
a file in XP is that the OS simply changes the first character of the
file name to a non-printing character, making them invisible to the
file system.

Most file recovery applications simply change the first character of
the file name in the MFT back to a printable character, thus making
them once again visible to the File system.

The sooner you recover these files, the more likely you will be able
to recover them. The longer you wait to recover them the more likely
that the space they take up on the HD will be over-written, thus
making recovery impossible.

Stop shouting, please.

You retrieve them from the backup you made.

Didn't make a backup? You're out of luck.
