Hi
I removed a program recently and it may have nothing to do with this, but it was some HP scanner software. The problem is that
a) The volume Icon is gone from the taskbar
b) In control panel/sounds, the option to have it on the taskbar is greyed out
c) Playback mode and record mode are also greyed out
d) Every item shows as working properly, including the sound card

How do I determine which driver is disabled, if any, and how do I enable the items in control panel that are greyed out.

Have you checked Device Manager to see if you still have a sound device? Is
there a hazard icon next to it indicating it isn't working? Tried to
reinstall the audio drivers?

Everything under Sound Controllers says it is working properly. Even so, I have tried running hardware wizard and having it reinstall the MPU-401 compatible midi device. I'm just not familiar enough with the system to know if this is also supposed to be the playback device. I've exhausted my knowledge and that's why I'm asking for help. Any thoughts on what I should try next?

MPU-401 doesn't sound like a sound card but more like the MIDI/game
controller support (on a sound card).

What devices are listed in Device Manager under "Sound, video and game
controllers"?

What devices are listed in the dropdown list in the Sounds applet in Control
Panel under the Audio panel for selectable playback and recording devices?

Do you know what sound card you have? Or is it onboard sound on the
motherboard (if so, what chipset does the motherboard have and have you
installed the chipset drivers)?
