How do I restore the original margin settings?

I was playing around and I think I set the margin setting all wonky. Could
someone tell me what the original page margins are? I would be appreciative.

For U.S. Letter, 1.25" left and right, 1" top and bottom, 0.5" header and
footer; for A4, I believe the equivalent in cm. One way to get back to the
default margins temporarily, just so you can see what they are, is to start
Word with the /a switch or (in recent versions) pressing Ctrl while loading.
This loads Word in Safe Mode, with the default Normal.dot. If you have made
no other modifications you want to save, you can rename Normal.dot, and Word
will generate a fresh factory-default copy; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm

When I tried loading Word in Safe Mode, I looked to see what the margins were
and they were 1" left and right, and 1" top and bottom. I am confused. Why
did Suzanne say the normal page margins for U.S. letter are 1.25 left and
right?

The default Left and Right margins are 1.25" in Word 2003 and earlier; they
are 1" in Word 2007. You didn't say what version you had?

Are you sure they are measured in points rather than Character Units? This
happens if you enable Asian Language support.

Check the settings in the printer driver to make sure you haven't made
Landscape the default orientation.

But those are not the "original" page margins (if by "original" the OP meant
default out-of-the-box margins).

No, I leave the defaults alone and change them if I want smaller.

My point is that mentioning half-inch margins is not helping the OP.
