How do I reset to original preferences in Microsoft Office?

Whenever I SELECT text in the EDIT menu and then hit the <backspace> key the
text fails to delete. Whenever I COPY selected text, using the edit menu and
then SELECT text using the EDIT menu (that I want to replace from the
clipboard and then use the paste function in the edit menu the text selected
text fails to delete. To delete selected text I must use the <delete> key.
I was originally able to do these operations but now they are not working. I
may have inadvertently changed a setting. How can I change the setting back
without re-installing the program? (Other applications are unaffected.) We
are refurbishing the house and changing living spaces in the house, so
software applications are in boxes and I cannot find or get to them for a few
months or more. Does anyone know how to solve this Microsoft Word problem in
Office 2003 or am I just stuck until I can re-install in 4 months to a year
from now? My Mac was not so complicated.

Also My <research> feature under Tools menu will not allow me to access
the Internet for Microsoft Word help as the Microsoft link has changed for
the 2003 Office. At least that is what it says.

Thank you for any insight in this matter?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit tab | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
