How do I remove SP2 downloads

J

Jerry Levine

I tried to install SP2 twice and had to restore the computer each time
because IE and OE could not connect to the internet. Netscape and Opera
could however. I just want to delete the downloads from my computer as I do
not really need SP2. I have excellent virus, firewall, spyware and popup
programs. Where do I find those two downloads and a new one that windows
just automatically downloaded?

Did you go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkID=26347 and follow the
advice there to prepare your computer for the SP2 download, or just roll the
dice?

Get the machine ready, install correctly and I suspect you will be very
pleased with the results.

Why do you think you don't need sp2. It's alot more than just a new pop-up
blocker and firewall. Over five million lines of code have been updated for
greater overall security. Why not just load sp2, then fix your IE and OE
prob. Possibly the lspfix will fix you up. Your prob most likely came from
having spyware installed during or before the sp2 upgrade. I'd prepare the
system correctly for the upgrade and try again. If IE is still broke visit
the ie groups and get fixed up.

First of note that your anti-virus program is not at issue. SP2
doesn't provide any anti-virus facilities.

SP2 gets a lot of publicity for its new firewall (although there
was also a firewall in XP before SP2, just not enabled by
default) and popup stopper, as well as for its Security Center.
But over and above its new features, there are also thousands of
lines of new code in SP2, fixing many, many problems. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811113&Product=windowsxpsp2
for the list of fixes.

You may want to reconsider your statement, "I do not really need
SP2." Whether or not you use its firewall or anti-popup features,
I advise almost everyone to install it because of its large
number of fixes.

The thought that anti-virus can protect an unpatched system is about like
the thought that a guard can protect a large building that is missing all
it's doors.

Moral of the story...patch your systems.
