how do i remove footer from only the last page in new word version

i am having such issues with the new version of word. after years w/ the old
version, i find it difficult to navigate the new version! to apply page
numbers is easy as there's an option to have a different first page. but i
want "continue" as a footer on all pages but the last and i can not seem to
get it to work or find the answer in "help"

You need an IF field with this syntax:

{ IF { PAGE } < { NUMPAGES } "Footer you want on every page but the last" }

All pairs of braces must be inserted using Ctrl+F9. The text between quotes
can be anything (including pictures, tables, paragraph breaks, etc.); if
it's something more than brief text, it's easier to create the field using a
placeholder and then copy/paste the desired content between the quotes.
