If using PPT 2002+ try the "Compress Pictures" option. This is effective,
but not the best. You can look to some of the third party add-ins
(
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptools/FAQ00013.htm is one), but be aware that if
you use .png images with transparency it is problematic. The best option is
to optimize all images to the right size in an external image editor
(PhotoShop, etc) and then import.
