How do I recover an original document that has been overwritten?

I was trying to correct the format in an original saved document. I
inadvertently lost some content when cutting and pasting and I cannot find
it. Is there a way that I can recover the lost content?

You could also look in the documents that you backed up to an external drive
last Sunday. You did back up last Sunday didn't you?
